Belarus, China might set up new joint ventures

20 July 2010

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – Belarus and China are considering a possibility to set up new joint ventures producing machines and medicines, Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Alexander Tsyganov told reporters on 20 July, BelTA has learnt.

“The government of Belarus, ministries and agencies are discussing the establishment of new science-intensive production facilities. The scientists of the National Academy of Sciences will act as exporters,” the academician said.

According to Alexander Tsyganov, new joint ventures will produce machines, pharmaceuticals and other products. The cooperation in power engineering is viewed important, too. A delegation of the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer has recently traveled to China to discuss the supplies of Belarusian technologies and equipment to China’s thermal stations. The project is estimated at $120 million. Alexander Tsyganov did not go into detail regarding the terms of the project, but said that the negotiations are underway.

The sci-tech cooperation is gaining momentum. Earlier Chinese specialists were interested primarily in applied research when working with Belarusians, but today they would like to cooperate in fundamental science as well. “China possesses great experience in applying know-how and we should learn from them,” Alexander Tsyganov said.

At present, the organizations affiliated with the NASB are implementing six joint projects falling under the 2008-2010 sci-tech cooperation program and 2006-2010 long-term cooperation program. Three joint projects are scheduled for 2011-2012.
