Belarus-China cooperation elevated to brand new level

15 June 2009

The cooperation between Belarus and China has reached a brand new level, said Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Aleinik at the opening of the Belarus-China trade and economic forum on June 15.

“Our relations have been taken on a brand new level. Multimillion investment projects will help the Belarusian economy make a major breakthrough and the Chinese economy demonstrate its achievements in the centre of Europe. The cooperation with the People’s Republic of China has been and will always be a priority avenue of the Belarusian foreign policy,” Sergei Aleinik said.

He reminded that Chinese companies are involved in modernization of Belarusian cement and power engineering facilities. Other joint projects include wheeled carriers assembly production in China, and a joint venture producing household appliances that was set up in Minsk in 2008. A joint production of BelAZ dump trucks may be launched in China, too. Chinese products are promoted on the Belarusian market by CITIC Group (China International Trust and Investment Corporation), Chinese National Corporation for Foreign Economic Cooperation, China Light Industry Corporation for Foreign Economic and Technical Cooperation (CLETC) and other organizations.

Sergei Aleinik underlined that Belarusian enterprises are interested in diversified and expanded supplies of industrial equipment, agricultural machines, foodstuffs and petrochemical products to China. “MTZ is looking for a reliable partner to set up an assembly production of Belarusian tractors in China,” the Deputy Minister said.

In 2008, the Belarus-China trade made up $2.2 billion, up 1.5 times from 2007. It means that Belarus exceeded the target to increase the bilateral trade up to $2 billion by 2010. According to Sergei Aleinik, Belarus sincerely hopes to maintain and expand the bilateral trade and is open for any suggestions of its Chinese partners.
