Belarus, China to start $800 mln investment projects in 2008

29 February 2008

Belarus and China will launch investment projects totaling U.S. $700 million-$800 million this year; the Chinese side has prepared nearly all of them, Ambassador to China Anatoly Tozik reported to President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday.

“Trade turnover may reach U.S. $2 billion this year if we manage to complete all projects,” Tozik said.

In 2006, trade between Belarus and China reached $1 billion, and in 2007, a new record of $1.5 billion was reached. In 2007, China signed agreements with Belarus to provide over $750 million in loans.

The president instructed the State Control Committee to double-check the largest investment projects. According to Tozik, some projects might have been implemented much faster but for unnecessary formalities.

Belarus plans to expand its diplomatic presence in China and open its consulate general in Shanghai this year.
