Belarus-China enterprise producing fungi to open in Institute for Vegetable-Growing NAN Belarus

03 December 2008

A joint Belarus-China enterprise on production of mushrooms will be created in Belarus, told BELTA Tamara Yanchevskaya, the head of department for mineral nutrition optimization and photosynthesis at the Institute of Experimental Botany named after V.F. Kuprevich of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new enterprise will be opened on the basis of the Institute for Vegetable-Growing of NAN Belarus. Here will be conducted production of champignon, pleurotus, black mushrooms, bracket fungus ordinary and varnish polypore, shiitake mushroom, crab fungi and enoki mushrooms. The Chinese scientists will provide Belarusian experts with cultivation technology thereof. The specialists from the Institute of Experimental Botany named after V.F. Kuprevich of the National Academy of Sciences together with the specialists from the Institute for Vegetable-Growing will adapt them to the Belarusian conditions.

The fungi produced can be applied both, in food industry and in pharmaceutical branch in the form of substances to produce medicaments, including those to heal oncological diseases.

The Chinese medics are certain in their opinion that many kinds of exotic mushrooms contain substances able to defeat cancer. In order to produce pharmaceuticals the Chinese specialists use more than 100 types of mushrooms which are more often used in the form of powders or aqueous extracts. Moreover, the statistical data show that the Chinese are susceptible to oncological diseases in far lesser extent than the residents of other countries. The Belarusian scientists plan to explore the experience of their Chinese colleagues in the field of these mushrooms medical application and to borrow the cutting edge of highly efficient technologies.

The Institute of Experimental Botany named after V.F. Kuprevich of the National Academy of Sciences develops the technologies in the field of reproduction, rational use and protection of the vegetable world. The experts of the scientific establishment examine physiological and biochemical mechanism to improve productiveness and hardiness of plants, develop adaptive methods of farming, carry out environmental monitoring.
