Belarus aims at close parliamentary relations with China

21 November 2007

Belarus plans to keep developing close contacts with China at the level of parliaments, Sergei Zabolotsets, the vice-speaker of Belarus’ lower chamber of parliament, the House of Representatives, said during his meeting with a Chinese parliamentary delegation led by a member of the Standing Committee of All-Chinese Assembly of People’s Representatives.

“China is developing fast, and proves that you can advance without breaking traditions. The situation in Belarus looks almost the same: we have seen an impressive expansion, and we will not slow down,” Zabolotets said.

He added that the two countries had not reached the desired collaboration level despite extensive contacts.

“We observe Belarus’ achievements in science and technologies. Belarus is among the CIS’ leaders by human development index,” said the Chinese parliamentarian.

Trade between Belarus and China rose 50.6% on the year in January-September 2007 to $908.7 million. Belarus’ exports increased 44.4% to $370.6 million, and imports from China went up 55.3% to $538.1 million.
